Our Intermediate Obedience group dog training class is designed for those students who have have successfully achieved a solid foundation of basic manners training in our basic level group classes (most students will need to attend two previous basic level classes to qualify, but contact us with questions) and/or during private lessons with one of our trainers. This group dog training class focuses on refining hand signals, improving responsiveness to

verbal cues, increasing responsiveness to cues at a distance, creating a more reliable recall (come when called), stay, impulse control, and leave it, and teaching ‘go to your place’ and settle. This course will help fine tune and improve upon your previous training, as well as allow you an opportunity for troubleshooting behavior issues common to NYC dog parents. Dogs with reactivity and/or aggression issues of any kind are not appropriate for this class.

Details

For dogs 5.5 months and older a record of their vaccinations must be signed by your veterinarian and include vaccine for: rabies, parvovirus, parainfluenza, adenovirus, bordatella, and distemper. You must bring a hard printed copy to your first class to give to the instructor to keep at the location.

For dogs of any size, breed, or mix that are previous graduates of our group classes and/or private lessons. For questions about this or anything else please email us.

Dogs should have no reactivity or aggression history. If you aren’t sure what this means, please email us.

The class fee is non-refundable, non-transferable and there are no make-up classes for your course.

Two people may attend with each canine student.

Methodology

What type of training do you use?

Our training philosophy is deeply rooted in creating a friendly and engaging environment for both dogs and their owners. We focus on motivational techniques that encourage dogs to actively participate in their learning process, helping them understand time management to avoid undesirable behaviors. By fostering a love for learning, we make training efficient and enjoyable, quickly integrating dogs as polite and well-behaved family members. We primarily use positive reinforcement because we believe it’s the most effective and humane method.

What types of tools do you use?

We carefully select tools that align with each dog’s preferences, using these to inspire and motivate them to follow instructions. Our range of rewards includes everything from verbal praise and physical affection to toys, treats, and situational perks like extra playtime. We equip our trainers with simple, effective tools such as buckle collars, front-clip harnesses, and leashes, alongside specialized items like treat pouches and target markers. Importantly, we stand against the use of electric shock collars, prioritizing your pet’s comfort and well-being.

Classes

What shots does my puppy need to attend class?

To ensure the health and safety of all participants, puppies must have their vaccinations updated according to their age. We emphasize the importance of early socialization for long-term well-being and recommend not delaying participation in classes beyond the initial vaccination phase. For detailed guidance, consult your veterinarian and consider expert resources, such as Dr. R.K. Anderson’s insightful letter on puppy socialization and vaccinations.

Can more than one person in my family attend the group training class?

Yes, we welcome two family members per dog in our classes to foster a supportive learning environment. Children are allowed but must be under constant supervision to maintain a calm and safe atmosphere for all attendees, ensuring no disruption to the class dynamics.

What should I bring to class?

Please ensure your dog comes to class on an empty stomach, having not eaten for one to two hours before starting to make the most of treat-based training. Bring soft, small-sized treats, a non-retractable 4-6 foot leash, and a suitable collar or harness. Also, consider bringing a hollow toy like ‘The Comfort Bone,’ which can be filled with food to keep your dog engaged during instructional times.
