Information about our course for adult dog

Our Basic Manners group dog training class is designed to help you set a solid foundation for important basic manners skills and to improve your understanding of a modern, science-based approach to communicating with and teaching your dog. For dogs with no reactivity and/or aggression issues (barking, lunging, snapping, biting, etc.)

In addition to manners skills useful for daily life and city living, this course will help you learn how to effectively increase desirable behaviors and decrease undesirable behaviors out in the real world and at home. Group Classes can be a wonderful opportunity to practice around distractions in order to best ensure reliable responses in challenging environments.

Details

Dogs should have absolutely no aggression history to people or dogs nor any reactivity issues to dogs (these issues can be addressed in private lessons). If you have questions please contact us.

The course meets for four one-hour classes and two people may attend per dog. The class fee is non-refundable, non-transferable, and there are no make-up classes. Prior to registering, please note the nature of offering limited space classes, the above stated policies, and that there are no exceptions. Please do not request an exception to the stated policies. Two people may attend each session, at least one person must attend who is a legal guardian/owner.

Per Health Department requirements, proof of vaccines must be signed by your veterinarian and include: rabies, parvovirus, parainfluenza, adenovirus, bordetella, and distemper. You must bring a hard/printed copy with you to the first class to give to the instructor to keep at the location.

Methodology

What training methods do you employ for adult dogs?

We embrace a friendly approach to both dogs and their owners. Our training philosophy is designed to increase your dog’s enthusiasm for learning by using positive reinforcement and structured play. This method not only prevents undesirable behaviors but also promotes good habits, making your dog a well-behaved family member. We focus on positive, reward-based training strategies to achieve these goals.

What tools are used during training??

We primarily use rewards that each dog prefers to encourage obedience. These rewards include praise, petting, toys, treats, and even special privileges like extra walk time or favorite sniffing spots. Our toolset includes standard buckle collars, front-clip harnesses, leashes, treat pouches, and markers for targeting exercises. We firmly oppose the use of electric shock collars.

Classes

What vaccinations are required for my dog to join classes?

Adult dogs must have current vaccinations appropriate for their age. Early socialization is crucial, so we advise not delaying enrollment in puppy classes waiting for a full vaccination schedule. Consult your vet and consider guidance from sources like Dr. R.K. Anderson’s letter on early socialization and vaccination..

Can multiple family members attend a training session?

Yes, up to two individuals may accompany each dog. Small children are welcome but must be supervised and remain calm to avoid distressing the dogs or disrupting the session.

What should I bring to the adult dig training class?

Ensure your dog hasn’t eaten for one to two hours before class to make the most of treat-based training. Bring soft, small treats, a 4-6 foot non-retractable leash, an appropriate collar or harness, and a hollow toy that can be filled with treats to keep your dog engaged during discussions. ‘The Comfort Bone’ is a recommended toy for this purpose.
